Cross-training of fire investigation personnel results in improved arson detection, investigation, and criminal prosecution.
Abstract
Fire investigators should be aware of proper judicial procedures. Such awareness facilitates the type of thorough, precise investigation that enhances prosecution. Arson investigators are more effective when trained in police procedures and fire cause determination. Many fire departments now have arson task forces that function as a specialized unit. All personnel involved in fire investigation should know the applicable procedures, techniques, and laws. A cross-trained staff saves the cost of additional personnel. Continuity of investigation is one of the largest benefits of cross-trained personnel. Two references are supplied.
