This publication presents a broad overview of Federal sentencing data for fiscal year 2012.
Abstract
This publication provides a brief, easy-to-use reference on the types of criminal cases handled by Federal courts and the punishments imposed on offenders convicted in those cases. Results show that of the 84,360 Federal criminal cases in which the offender was sentenced in fiscal year 2012, 84,173 involved an individual offender and 187 involved a corporation or other "organizational" offender. Topics examined include demographics of cases for individuals; individual offender characteristics; case disposition; the most common crimes(immigration, drugs most common involving cocaine), fraud, firearms and other weapons, organizational cases (corporations and partnerships), and resentencing and other modifications of sentence (most common type being reduction in sentence for substantial assistance to the government after sentencing). 15 endnotes
