The 1974 Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act established the National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect (NCCAN) to generate knowledge and improve programs; collect analyze, and disseminate information; assist States and communities in implementing child abuse programs; and coordinate Federal efforts.
Abstract
Since 1975 NCCAN has funded approximately 375 projects nationwide to increase knowledge about preventing, identifying, and treating child abuse and neglect. Project priorities for 1984 include prevention projects for maltreated adolescents, the building of capacity and resources in minority communities, the use of school systems to prevent child maltreatment, and an assessment of the 'lack of supervision' aspect of child neglect. In the information area, NCCAN sponsors the ongoing collection and analysis of statistics on suspected child abuse and neglect as reported from the States. Ten regional resource centers disseminate information on a variety of family topics. Under the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, eligible States are provided with funds to develop, strengthen, and implement prevention and treatment programs. The primary vehicle for coordinating Federal efforts is the Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect, an interagency board which advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services on the coordination of Federal efforts to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.
