Purposes of Canada's National Justice Statistics Initiative (NJSI) are to collect and disseminate justice statistics and information to support the administration of justice and to ensure that accurate information on the nature and extent of crime and the administration of civil and criminal justice is available to the Canadian public.
Abstract
The responsibility for Canada's criminal justice system is shared between two Federal and 22 provincial and territorial government departments. The lead responsibility for developing statistical systems rests with Statistics Canada. The NJSI is unique in that it represents a collaborative effort in which all jurisdictions share authority and responsibility for developing and achieving common objectives. The NJSI's governing body is the Justice Information Council (JIC). The JIC is chaired by the Deputy Minister of Justice Canada and consists of Federal and provincial deputy ministers with justice responsibilities and the Chief Statistician. The NJSI's operational arm is the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics (CCJS). Basic types of information available from the CCJS include caseload, case characteristics, revenue, expenditure, and personnel data. The work of the CCJS is organized into three main areas: (1) Policy Planning and Evaluation, (2) Statistics and Information Directorate, and (3) Technical Assistance Directorate. The Statistics and Information Directorate collects information on police services, courts, and corrections.
