This chapter examines the region of the Pacific Rim and how the individual countries within the region are responding to terrorist actions based on their backgrounds and histories.
Abstract
The Pacific Rim has become a major trading block, both import and export for the rest of the world. It includes those countries from Australia to Japan and has suffered major financial crisis. The importance of this group of nations is reflected by its impact on the trading exchanges around the globe during the recent financial crises. Financial and political chaos creates opportunities for terrorist groups to take advantage to forward their causes. The governments and economies vary in the Pacific Rim region. This chapter examines many countries within the Pacific Rim suffering from wars, insurgencies, corrupt governments, and right and left wing terrorists. The chapter begins with China, the largest country in the region in terms of population and production, followed by Taiwan, Japan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Australia. 5 endnotes
