TREATS THE SUCCESS OF A HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN ENGLAND IN NURTURING COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY AND A LOW CRIME RATE IN SPITE OF VIOLATION OF GENERALLY ACCEPTED ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES FOR ACCOMPLISHING THIS.
Abstract
PARK HILL, A WORKING CLASS HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, IS CONSIDERED BY THE AUTHOR TO TRANSGRESS POPULAR ARCHITECTURAL PRINCIPLES FOR AIDING CRIME PREVENTION. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT PARK HILL'S LOW CRIME RATE IS NOT SO MUCH RELATED TO ITS ARCHITECTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AS A SPIRIT OF CARING NURTURED BY MANAGERIAL POLICIES BASED ON AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE NEEDS AND BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS OF THOSE OCCUPYING THE HOUSING.
