The 41 State parole systems that responded to a survey on parole revocations provided data revealing that the number of parole revocations in 1988 has increased approximately 4 percent over 1987.
Abstract
In 1987, 21 percent of parolees had their parole revoked. In 1988, 22 percent were discharged after successfully completing parole, a decrease from the 24 percent recorded in 1987. In the 41 States, a total of 445,274 people are on parole. Fifty-six percent of the revocations were for violating parole conditions, and 38 percent were for committing a new crime. Approximately 22,700 parolees are under the interstate compact parole supervision program. More than 32,000 people are on parole and supervised in other States. The 39 responding States reported more than one million offenders on probation. The revocation rate for probation was 11 percent, and 33 percent were discharged after successful completion. Tables
