A REPORT CONTAINING STATISTICS ABOUT ADULT PAROLE IN THE UNITED STATES AS OF 1978 IS DISCUSSED THAT DEALS WITH PAROLE SUPERVISION, THE PRISON POPULATION, CRIME LEVELS, AND THE RATE OF PAROLE USE.
Abstract
DATA FOR THE REPORT WERE OBTAINED FROM 56 PAROLE AGENCIES TO ASCERTAIN HOW MANY PERSONS ARE ON PAROLE, HOW MANY PERSONS ENTERED PAROLE DURING 1978, AND HOW MANY PERSONS WERE REMOVED FROM PAROLE DURING 1978. SOURCES OUTSIDE THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON CRIME AND DELINQUENCY WERE USED TO EXPLORE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PAROLE DATA AND OTHER ISSUES RELATED TO PAROLE, CRIMINAL JUSTICE, AND SOCIETY AS A WHOLE. THESE ISSUES INCLUDE PAROLE SUPERVISION, THE PRISON POPULATION, CRIME LEVELS, THE TOTAL U.S. POPULATION, TRENDS IN PAROLE AND PRISON POPULATIONS, AND TRENDS IN THE RATE OF PAROLE USE. THE REPORT DISCUSSES DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURES EMPLOYED IN THE SURVEY, FINDINGS PERTINENT TO THE PAROLE SUPERVISION POPULATION AND PAROLE STAFF RESOURCES, AND NATIONAL PAROLE DATA COLLECTION EFFORTS. CONSIDERATION IS ALSO GIVEN TO THE CONTEXT OF PAROLE AND TO LONG-TERM TRENDS IN PAROLE AND PRISON POPULATIONS. REPORT APPENDIXES CONTAIN TABLES, PAROLE AGENCY NOTES, AND REFERENCE WORKS CITED. (DEP)
