This article focuses on the efforts of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to share and exchange resources and techniques in highway safety.

Abstract

For the past decade, NHTSA has brought individuals from a half-dozen States to participate in year-long activities directly related to highway safety. Assigned to the agency's Washington, D.C. headquarters, these law enforcement officials are exposed to the many elements involved in developing, marketing, and managing national highway safety campaigns and issues. Programs were developed in alcohol abuse, radar training, occupant protection, heavy truck enforcement, comprehensive traffic enforcement, and maintenance and development of the Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS). Participants return to their agencies with a global perspective on highway safety management and become a ready source for NHTSA, exchanging information and working together in emphasis areas. Conversely, the States gain valuable information from NHTSA simply by taking advantage of the available material. A ready reference to material available from the NHTSA Office of Enforcement and Emergency Services is listed.
