This book provides an ethical framework for personal development, growth and professional success in the field of criminal justice.
Abstract
The book is intended primarily for police officers and students of law enforcement who are searching for practical ways to resolve the ethical dilemmas that are a part of their chosen profession. It is also useful for others in the caregiving professions who are questioning the significance of the work they do and who want to make positive changes in their personal and professional lives. The book's primary focus is on how today's police officer determines the "right" thing to do. Four chapters investigate 25 specific subject areas, including: (1) Ethical Decisionmaking in a Combat Environment; (2) Police Discretion; (3) Organizational Effect on Police Ethics; (4) Ten Ethical Dilemmas Facing Police Officers; (5) Activating Your Belief System; (6) Corruption, Politics, and Crime; (7) The Law Enforcement Code of Ethics; and (8) observations and discussions based on philosophical writings from the past.
