Abstract
The Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies (PATHS) curriculum aims to enhance social and emotional competence and understanding in children, as well as to develop a caring, prosocial context that facilitates educational processes in the classroom. The curriculum consists of 119 lessons. An optional readiness and self-control unit contains an additional 12 lessons. The manual explains the rationale for using such a curriculum; summarizes the goals, procedures, lessons, and generalization strategies for each of the four PATHS units; and discusses alternative strategies relating to the scope and sequence most appropriate for a particular classroom. Further sections provide practical guidelines on instructional issues, materials, arranging the classroom, establishing basic rules for behavior and participation, activities, and preparation for each lesson.
