This book describes 11 programs designed to help adolescents acquire the knowledge and skills required for independent living in the transition to adulthood from foster homes, institutions, and inadequate parenting.
Abstract
Three models presented are group residences, congregate apartments, and scattered site apartments. These various forms of housing coincide with the staffing pattern and the cost of each program. Two other programs, New Life Youth Services in Ohio and Oasis Center in Tennessee, provide a continuum of care that demonstrates what agencies can achieve by integrating a series of programs which focus on independent living. The remaining program descriptions feature State and county agencies discussing the challenges and opportunities available to public agencies operating independent living programs. The Colorado and Arizona State departments of social services feature the development of a policy on independent living preparation that is an outgrowth of their program philosophies and experiences. A Florida county-operated runaway shelter provides a network of county programs to prepare its chronic runaway youth for independence, and the Judge Baker Children's Center in Massachusetts is a model of cooperation between public and private organizations. 34-item annotated bibliography and 3 references.
