This workbook is intended for those adolescents who have expressed concern over their past experiences with criminal conduct and substance abuse and wish to obtain the knowledge and skills to change their behavior through participation in the Pathways to Self-Discovery program.
Abstract
The Pathways to Self-Discovery program is divided into three phases. The first phase, deciding what to change, consists of 10 sessions. Within this phase there are five important things that need to be done: (1) build trust; (2) learn the facts about alcohol and other drugs (AOD) and criminal behavior; (3) become aware of oneself and ones relation with AOD and criminal behavior; (4) understand the triggers that could lead to a relapse; and (5) develop a self-portrait. The second phase consists of discovering the tools for change and learning the necessary skills to achieve the changes one decides on. This phase is designed to improve communication, deal with cravings and urges, develop a sense of responsibility to others, overcome prejudice, no negative thinking, and manage uncomfortable feelings. Phases I and II are preparation for Phase III. In this final phase, one puts the knowledge one has gained in Phase I and II into use within one's own life situation. This means looking at how to avoid relapse and recidivism by mastering skills of problem solving, decisionmaking, and negotiation, as well as how to develop alternative lifestyles and activities to help maintain the changes made. This workbook, intended for program participants (adolescents), describes the Pathways to Self-Discovery program and the three phases which comprise the program. Worksheets, figures, and tables
