PATROL DOG SELECTION, TRAINING, AND CAPABILITIES ARE REVIEWED FOR MILITARY POLICE APPLICATIONS.
Abstract
WITH THE AID OF A VETERINARIAN SPECIALIZING IN ANIMAL BEHAVIOR PSYCHOLOGY, AN EFFICIENT, REWARD-ORIENTED TRAINING PROGRAM WAS DEVISED. THE PROGRAM WORKS FOR PATROL DOGS AS WELL AS FOR DRUG AND EXPLOSIVES DETECTOR DOGS. THE STATE OF THE ART DOES NOT YET PERMIT A CONSOLIDATION OF DRUG AND EXPLOSIVES DETECTION IN ONE DOG, BECAUSE THE SEARCH STRATEGIES AND ALERT SIGNALS ARE DIFFERENT, BUT THIS MAY BE CHANGED IN THE FUTURE.
