This report summarizes information from several sources regarding drug abuse in Washington, D.C.
Abstract
Recent data reveal that Washington ranks near the national average on most statistical indicators of drug abuse in major cities. The Washington, D.C. area ranks near the middle in the number of emergency room drug-related episodes per 100,000 population among the 21 cities taking part in the Drug Abuse Warning Network program. The Drug Use Forecasting System reports that a higher percentage of juvenile and adult male arrestees test positive for drugs than in other cities. Crack remains the illegal drug of choice in the District of Columbia. Little consensus exists regarding whether heroin use has increased. As of March 31, 1993, a total of 4,404 cases of AIDS were reported in the District of Columbia. Other data focus on the use of blunts to smoke marijuana, cocaine emergencies, drug abuse among the homeless, and drug treatment outcome research. Figures
