This curriculum guide for elementary school teachers is intended to reach children from violent homes and others who are learning violence from society to prevent them from developing values which would make them vulnerable to becoming future victims or abusers.
Abstract
Between 1984 and 1988 a dozen Hawaiian schools experimented with self-esteem lessons, primarily dealing with saying no to drugs. An expanded curriculum is present in this guide which focuses on achieving peace in interpersonal relations with the broader goal of achieving peace on earth. Goals of the curriculum include self-esteem, empathy for others, non-violence, self-control and self discipline, and equal respect for women. A behavior assessment for parents, observation checklist, and sample letter to parents are provided. Sixteen lesson plans are the focus of the material which includes visual aids, class activities, key points to cover, and conclusions or objectives for each 30-minute session.
