Responses by 3,155 Ohio peace officers to a survey on the reports they file, the equipment they use, the tasks they perform, the sources they rely on, and the physical activities they undertake in doing their jobs are analyzed.
Abstract
Law enforcement in Ohio is dominated by white males in their twenties and early thirties. Further, patrol officers average 13.39 years of formal education, and 60 percent have completed at least some posthigh-school studies. About one-third of the respondents characterized their patrol areas as urban, another as suburban, and one-fourth as a combination of urban-suburban-rural. Less than one-tenth described their jurisdiction as rural. Several pieces of equipment are closely related with law enforcement patrol work: 95 percent reported using an automobile daily, and 88 percent reported carrying flashlights and handcuffs. Appendixes contain the survey instruments. Included are 49 tables, 48 figures, and 73 references.
