This resource guide for school administrators is based on the assumption that schools can play a significant role in a comprehensive community approach toward violence prevention.
Abstract
The guide grew out of the efforts of a task force of the Illinois Council for the Prevention of Violence to identify and implement school-based violence prevention and life skills development strategies. The task force developed a framework for considering school-based efforts in these areas, outlined criteria for reviewing violence prevention curricula and other resources, examined violence prevention resources for schools, and identified initial strategies for assisting schools in implementing violence prevention programs. This resource guide contains Illinois statistics on violence and youth, an overview of the role schools play in addressing violence, questions for schools to use in assessing the school-community environment, a framework for developing a comprehensive approach to violence prevention in schools, and an annotated bibliography of recommended curricula and resources.
