THE SEMINAR FOCUSED ON THE NEED FOR ESTABLISHING CLOSE WORKING RELATIONSHIPS AMONG THE MEDICAL, LEGAL, AND SOCIAL WORK PROFESSIONS IN MANAGING CASES OF CHILD ABUSE. THE SEMINAR WAS COSPONSORED BY THE PENNSYLVANIA BUREAU OF CHILD WELFARE, THE MILTON S. HERSHEY MEDICAL CENTER, THE YOUNG LAWYERS SECTION OF THE PENNSYLVANIA BAR ASSOCIATION, AND REGION THREE OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE. TOPICS ADDRESSED INCLUDE THE ROLE OF THE PROTECTIVE SERVICES WORKER, THE ROLE OF THE PHYSICIAN, THE ROLE OF THE LAWYER, CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES LAW, AND MEDICAL, LEGAL, AND SOCIAL SERVICES ASPECTS OF CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT. SINCE 1973, PENNSYLVANIA HAS ESTABLISHED A CENTRAL REGISTRY FOR CHILD ABUSE COMPLAINTS AS WELL AS A STATEWIDE REPORTING SYSTEM, DEVELOPED A POSTER FOR DISPLAY IN HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOMS, AND IMPLEMENTED AN INTENSIVE PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN. THE 1975 CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES LAW PROVIDED A UNIFORM DEFINITION OF CHILD ABUSE AND REQUIRED THAT PHYSICIANS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS REPORT ANY SUSPECTED CHILD ABUSE CASES. THE SEMINAR AGENDA, A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS, AND THE ADDRESS FROM WHICH TO OBTAIN ADDITIONAL COPIES OF THE PROCEEDINGS ARE INCLUDED. (CFW)
