Abstract
VOLUNTEERS ARE URGED TO LEARN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE STANDARDS AND OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR PENNSYLVANIA PRISONS AND LOCAL DETENTION FACILITIES, CORRECTIONS IN GENERAL, THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND THE PENNSYLVANIA PRISON SOCIETY. THEY SHOULD ATTEND REGULAR MEETINGS OF THEIR VOLUNTEER BRANCH. VOLUNTEERS SHOULD ALWAYS ADHERE TO INSTITUTION RULES AND AVOID COMPLYING WITH INMATES' WISHES THAT RUN COUNTER TO RULES. VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES INCLUDE INTERVIEWING INMATES TO DETERMINE THEIR APTITUDE FOR VARIOUS INMATE PROGRAMS, PRISON MONITORING, COURT MONITORING, AND COUNSELING INMATES ON MATTERS SUCH AS EMPLOYMENT, PAROLE, AND PROBATION DESIGNS. VOLUNTEERS WILL NEED TO DEVELOP SPECIAL INTERVIEW AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS; GENERAL SUGGESTIONS ARE PROVIDED. A BIBLIOGRAPHY ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, PRISONS, AND INMATE ISSUES IS INCLUDED.
