In the fall of 1994 and spring of 1995, the Pennsylvania Justice Fellowship Task Force held nine public hearings across the State and two in-prison roundtable discussions; the content of these hearings and roundtables is summarized in this report.
Abstract
The hearings will form the foundation on which the task force will develop a comprehensive criminal justice system reform plan for Pennsylvania. The public hearings drew participants from the following city areas: Lancaster, Pittsburgh, Allentown/Bethlehem, Williamsport, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Erie, Johnstown/Altoona, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg. The roundtable discussions of prison administrators, prison staff, and inmates were held at the Muncy State correctional institution and the Graterford State correctional institution. Categories of speakers at the hearings and roundtables included prison chaplains, church leaders, corrections officers, county/city officials and county associations, defense attorneys, district attorneys, educators, ex-offenders/families of offenders, family treatment specialists, inmates, inmate advocates, intermediate punishment program coordinators, judges, juvenile justice, law enforcement, prison ministry workers, prison officials, and probation/parole officials and program directors. Speakers also included sentencing experts, State officials, substance abuse treatment specialists, victims and victim advocates, women-in-prison specialists, and work-release administrators. A one-page summary of each participant's comments is provided. Task Force members are also listed.
