AN ANTHOLOGY EMPHASIZING THE REHABILITATIVE APPROACH TO CORRECTIONS INCLUDING READINGS IN THE PSYCHOLOGY OF INMATES AND SOCIAL DYNAMICS OF PRISON LIFE, THE USE OF BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES, AND PROBATION AND PAROLE.
Abstract
A PRINCIPAL PROBLEM OF CORRECTIONS IS SEEN TO BE THE SUBCULTURAL CONDITIONING OF PRISON LIFE THAT INTENSIFIES AND REINFORCES ALIENATION FROM DOMINANT CULTURAL NORMS OF SOCIETY. A MAJOR TASK OF REHABILITATION IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE STRUCTURING OF A MILIEU THAT WILL AID ADJUSTMENT TO THE FORMS OF SOCIETY EXPRESSED IN LAW AND VOCATIONAL STRUCTURES. VARIOUS TYPES OF THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMS ARE DISCUSSED, AND THE PROBLEMS AND PROMISES OF PROBATION AND PAROLE ARE CONSIDERED. THE PROS AND CONS OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ARE ANALYZED. SOME REALISTIC GOALS FOR CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS ARE PROJECTED, WHICH INCLUDES A MODEL DESCRIPTION FOR A PROGRESSIVE PRISON. THE BOOK HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR USE IN PENOLOGY AND CORRECTION COURSES AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL, FOR PRACTITIONERS IN THE FIELD OF CORRECTIONS, AND FOR THE INTERESTED PUBLIC.
