Abstract
The guide explains how the case reaches the district attorney's office for processing, the screening process, the reasons some cases are dismissed, the role of the grant jury, the pretrial, the subpoena, what to wear to court, how to prepare for and deliver testimony, and courtroom procedure. It also explains when property will be returned, plea bargaining, what happens if the victim decides not to prosecute, what to do if a defense attorney is in contact about the case, and what to do if threatened to drop the charges. Further sections focus on appeals, parole, the victim impact statement, crime victims' rights under Texas law, victim compensation, other sources of compensation, restitution, the law regarding domestic assault, and procedures and issues related to protective orders.
