OVERVIEW OF CORRECTIONS AS AN ELEMENT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, WITH HISTORICAL MATERIAL, STATISTICS AND INFORMATION ON REHABILITATION WORK AND PUBLIC OPINION.
Abstract
EFFECTS OF IMPRISONMENT, RECIDIVISM, DETENTION PENDING INVESTIGATION, SEXUAL AND SOCIAL RELATIONS PROBLEMS, ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE PROBLEMS, AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS CONNECTED WITH FEMALE INMATES ARE DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED. ALSO DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED ARE EFFORTS AT RESOCIALIZATION AND THE WORK AND SPECIAL PROBLEMS OF CORRECTIONS PERSONNEL. THE VARIOUS TYPES OF PRISONS IN THE NETHERLANDS, INCLUDING OPEN AND SEMIOPEN PRISONS, ARE DESCRIBED. THE NATURE AND FUNCTIONING OF GOVERNMENT COMMITMENT OF PSYCHOPATHIC OFFENDERS TO INSTITUTIONS, THE EFFORTS OF ORGANIZATIONS ENGAGED IN REHABILITATION WORK, AND PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD CRIME AND CORRECTIONS ARE COVERED. STATISTICAL MATERIAL IS INCLUDED IN THE TEXT WHERE APPROPRIATE. DIAGRAMS SHOWING THE STRUCTURE OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM, THE FUNCTIONING OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AS AN OFFENDER PASSES THROUGH THE JUDICIAL PROCESS, THE ORGANIZATION FOR RESOCIALIZATION WORK WITHIN A PRISON, AND THE ORGANIZATION OF REHABILITATION WORK IN THE NETHERLANDS ARE PROVIDED.
