This study examined the interaction of perceived workplace fairness and transformational leadership behavior on the work motivation of Nigeria police officers.
Abstract
The Nigerian police force has suffered from a lack of public confidence. Recent attempts to enhance the work motivation of Nigeria’s police officers have mainly focused on the provision of material resources while other organizational factors impacting motivation have been largely ignored. The current study used a cross-sectional survey design to collect data from 184 Nigeria police officers on perceived transformational leadership, perceived workplace fairness, and work motivation in order to understand the relationships among these variables in terms of increasing police officer work motivation. Results of correlation analysis suggest that perceived workplace fairness and transformational leadership have a significant and positive relationship on officer work motivation. The findings on transformational leadership were analyzed using social exchange theory and the author stresses the importance of this type of leadership management for the Nigerian police force. Future research should explore the procedural and interactive factors influencing police work motivation. Tables, figure, references
