The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention awarded a grant to the Council of Juvenile Correctional Administrators to develop performance-based standards for juvenile correctional facilities that focus on outcome measures.
Abstract
Following field testing in 1997, the standards and self-assessment tools were implemented at 32 facilities nationwide in 1998. As of August 2000, these facilities had completed the third round of data collection and facility improvement plans. An additional 24 facilities will join the project, and the project team has been working with representatives of the American Correctional Association (ACA) to integrate performance-based standards with the ACA accreditation process. The goal is to ensure that facilities are not overwhelmed with various sets of standards and that ACA standards and performance-based standards are not redundant. It is hoped that performance-based standards will be integrated into the ACA accreditation process with respect to both program and nonprogram standards, data collection, facility improvement plans, consultants, diagnostic tools, and demonstration program grants. 1 table and 2 figures
