This manual outlines performance objectives for the PC 832 Course in California, which is designed as an introductory overview to the law enforcement profession in California.
Abstract
The course covers arrest procedures as well as firearms use and management. The course is certified for presentation at more than 70 locations throughout the State and is typically attended by those in law enforcement, corrections, or investigative professions, as well as private security personnel and citizens interested in criminal justice. Performance objectives related to the arrest course pertain to the maintenance of a professional orientation in implementing arrest procedures, being sensitive to cultural differences in the management of arrestees, compliance with the law governing arrest procedures, adherence to the laws of evidence in the course of making an arrest, the use of clear and respectful communications during an arrest, the effective use of investigative techniques, and the use of appropriate mechanisms in controlling the arrestee. Performance objectives for the firearms course pertain to firearms safety; becoming familiar with handguns; the care, cleaning, and storage of the service handgun; firearms shooting principles; and firearms range qualification. An index of PC 832 curriculum contents is outlined by functional area and performance objective.
