Abstract
A MATHEMATICAL MODEL IS EMPLOYED THAT EMBODIES THE GENERALLY AGREED UPON FACTS ABOUT THE PROBLEM, AS WELL THE INFORMED OPINIONS OF NUMEROUS SOCIAL SCIENTISTS, TREATMENT SPECIALISTS, ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, ADDICTS, AND VICTIMS. THE AUTHORS ANALYZE THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CAUSES OF ADDICTION AND CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE WHOLE ARRAY OF CORRECTIVE STRATEGIES AND THE TRADE-OFFS AMONG THEM. NUMEROUS TABLES AND DIAGRAMS ARE PRESENTED, AS WELL AS AN APPENDIX WHICH DETAILS THE COMPLEX MATHEMATICAL MODEL EMPLOYED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
