DESCRIPTION OF THE PERSONAL VHF/UHF TRANSCEIVER PROTOTYPE DEVELOPMENT EFFORT AND THE FIVE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE TRANSCEIVER THAT WERE PRODUCED DURING THE PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM INVOLVED THE DEVELOPMENT OF STATE-OF-THE-ART MICROELECTRONIC MODULES, MINIATURE PARTS, AND MODULAR PACKAGING TECHNIQUES TO MEET THE DESIGN OBJECTIVES OF A SMALL, LIGHTWEIGHT, EASY-TO-MAINTAIN PERSONAL TRANSCEIVER TO SATISFY REQUIREMENTS OF MUNICIPAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES AND AIR FORCE SECURITY POLICE. EACH PROTOTYPE TRANSCEIVER CONSISTS OF A QUICK DISCONNECT, TILTABLE ANTENNA, AN ELECTRONICS UNIT CONTAINING ALL CIRCUITS AND OPERATING CONTROLS, AND A DETACHABLE, SELF-CONTAINED, RECHARGEABLE BATTERY ASSEMBLY. IT IS DESIGNED TO BE WORN AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF A POLICE OFFICER'S UNIFORM AND TO BE USED IN HANDHELD OPERATION. FOUR CONVENIENTLY LOCATED OPERATING CONTROLS ALLOW THE TRANSCEIVER TO BE OPERATED IN THE DARK OR UNDER A GARMENT. THE AIR FORCE TRANSCEIVERS WEIGH 20.8 OUNCES AND HAVE A VOLUME OF 19.6 CUBIC INCHES. THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ASSISTANCE ADMINISTRATION TRANSCEIVER WEIGHS 18.7 OUNCES AND HAS A VOLUME OF 17.1 CUBIC INCHES. THE RF POWER OUTPUT IS 4 WATTS, AND THE RECEIVER SENSITIVITY IS 0.35 MICROVOLTS AT VHF, AND 0.5 MICROVOLTS AT UHF. FIVE DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE ELECTRONICS SECTION WERE BUILT SO AS TO RECEIVE AND TRANSMIT ON VHF AND/OR UHF. THE REQUIREMENTS WERE MET BY USING A COMBINATION OF THICK FILM HYBRID SUBSTRATE MODULES, MINIATURE DISCRETE COMPONENT MODULES, AND CUSTOM DEVELOPED MINIATURE ELECTRICAL PARTS AND MECHANICAL HARDWARE. THIS REPORT CONTAINS GENERAL, FUNCTIONAL, PHYSICAL, AND ELECTRICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE PERSONAL TRANSCEIVER AS WELL AS AN EXPLANATION OF THE DESIGN APPROACH. NUMEROUS DIAGRAMS, PHOTOGRAPHS, TABLES, GRAPHS, TEST DATA, AND TECHNICAL REPORTS ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
