A SEMINAR FOR DEVELOPING A MANAGEMENT AND INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT BASE FOR AN OUTWARD BOUND WILDERNESS TRAINING PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE PARTICULAR SEMINAR DESCRIBED WAS HELD FOR REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES IN 1974. THE PURPOSE OF THE SEMINAR WAS TO INITIATE PROGRAMMATICALLY THE ADAPTATION OF COLORADO'S OUTWARD BOUND PROGRAM TO THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS TOOK PART IN THE TYPES OF ACTIVITIES CHARACTERISTIC OF WILDNERNESS TRAINING (HIKING, CAMPING, AND TEAM WORK). EXPLANATIONS AND GROUP DISCUSSIONS OF THE PHILOSOPHY, PRINCIPLES, AND PRACTICES OF A WILDNERNESS TRAINING PROGRAM WERE HELD, AND 'BRAINSTORMING' BY THE GROUP REGARDING STRATEGIES FOR THE USE OF THE PROGRAM IN THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES TOOK PLACE. THE SEMINAR WAS CONDUCTED IN A STATE PARK WHERE THE WILDERNESS SETTING PROVIDED AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PROGRAM EXPERIENCES. PRECOURSE PREPARATION, SEMINAR LOGISTICS, AND THE COURSE SEQUENCE ARE DESCRIBED. AN EVALUATION BY THE SEMINAR STAFF INDICATES THAT OBJECTIVES WERE REALIZED TO A HIGH DEGREE, AS SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS CAME AWAY ENTHUSED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF ADAPTING THE WILDERNESS TRAINING PROGRAM TO DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES OBJECTIVES.
