This annual report highlights the activities of the South Dakota Department of Corrections Pheasantland Industries during fiscal year 1993.
Abstract
Because inmates rarely possess previous training or work experience before working in a Pheasantland Industries field, all training is done on-the-job by the work supervisor. The training covers specialized skills, as well as job-keeping skills such as punctuality, cooperation, acceptance of constructive criticism, and following directions. Nonetheless, the hiring practices resemble those in society, where inmates must apply and interview for vacant positions. The industries engaged in by inmates in South Dakota range from furniture restoration and printing, to signs and decals production, bookbindery, license plate manufacture, kennel operation, garment production, and farming. In 1993, the Department established several private sector enterprises, each of which was approved by the State and Federal government; inmates now manufacture military backpacks and draw county plats.
