Twenty papers present a state-of-the-science report on the basic biological mechanisms underlying Phencyclidine's (PCP's) action and current, as well as potential, treatment approaches to PCP abuse.
Abstract
One group of papers focuses on the basic neurobiology of PCP, with attention to the two types of PCP-binding brain molecules whose binding with PCP initiates a distinctive series of neurochemical events that produce characteristic behaviors. A general review of the effects produced by PCP in laboratory animals shows that PCP is a unique drug that stands alone in its complex effects and toxicity. A number of papers discuss treatment strategies for PCP abusers, including treatment methods adapted to each of the four major PCP symptom patterns. One paper reports on the successful treatment of middle-class adolescent PCP abusers in a daily peer-group meeting. References for each paper and a list of other publications in the Monograph Series.
