THE 1977 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PHOENIX, ARIZ., POLICE DEPARTMENT IS PRESENTED, CONTAINING STATISTICS AND NARRATIVE ON GOALS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS, ACTIVITIES BY BUREAU, AND DEPARTMENT STATISTICS.
Abstract
THE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYS 2,055 PERSONS AND HAS 19 BUREAUS INCLUDING PATROL, CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION, SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT, TRAFFIC COMMUNICATIONS, INFORMATION, LABORATORY, COMMUNITY SERVICES, COMPUTER SERVICES, INTERNAL INSPECTION, PLANNING AND RESEARCH, AND OTHERS. IN 1977, A TEAM EXPERIMENT IN AREA MOBILIZATION WAS COMPLETED PROVIDING CITIZENS OF A 9-SQUARE MILE AREA WITH THE ADVANTAGES OF A SMALL-TOWN POLICE FORCE AND THE RESOURCES OF A LARGE POLICE DEPARTMENT; THE EXPERIMENT INVOLVED 50 OFFICERS ASSIGNED TO SERVE 25,000 RESIDENTS. THE CRIME RESISTANCE PROGRAM, STRESSING COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT, WAS CONTINUED FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND EXPANDED. THE PROGRAM RELIED ON MEDIA AND INFORMATION PAMPHLETS TO RALLY CITIZEN INTEREST AND SUPPORT AND RECEIVED A 40-FOOT MOBILE CRIME RESISTANCE DISPLAY VAN TO USE AT VARIOUS BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS THROUGHOUT THE CITY. PROGRAM STAFF ENLISTED VARIOUS COMMUNITY SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS TO SPONSOR HOME SECURITY CHECKS AND PARTICIPATION IN OPERATION IDENTIFICATION AND BLOCK WATCH PROGRAMS. A DETECTION DOG TRAINING PROGRAM AND REORGANIZATION OF THE MANAGEMENT SERVICES DIVISION WERE COMPLETED. THE DEPARTMENT CLEARED 25,863 (OR 27 PERCENT) OF CRIME REPORTS FOR THE YEAR, RECOVERED $6,145 IN STOLEN PROPERTY, AND PERFORMED 102,045 VEHICLE CHECKS. OTHER STATISTICS AND AN ANALYSIS OF CRIMES CLEARED ARE PRESENTED. (DAG)
