In May 1990 nearly 500 surviving family members of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty will gather at the National Police Survivors Seminar in Arlington, Va. to try to cope with the emotional issues they face and to turn their tragedies into personal and family fulfillment.
Abstract
The seminar is sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS). Sessions will explain the grief process and the emotional and physical reactions to it. In addition, trained counselors will lead group discussions as surviving spouses share experiences, surviving parents talk with other surviving parents, and other family members meet to share their grief experiences and talk about rebuilding their lives. Additional sessions will focus on subjects such as preparing for trial, identifying substance abuse during the grief process, helping children cope with grief, and forgiveness. These sessions should prepare families for the National Peace Officers' Memorial Day Service to be held May 15. Case narratives.
