This article discusses a tool for police work called PictureLink, made by Dynamic Imaging Systems.
Abstract
PictureLink has its roots in PicturePower, a software program that allows video camera images to be digitized. PictureLink allows police to logically link a mugshot photo to an arrest record in a matter of minutes. It captures images using a video camera, stores them as JPEG's and manages them along with descriptor data. The automated system is a turnkey solution. Dynamic Imaging Systems provides a PC, video camera, lighting system, interface to the agency’s existing records system, interfaces for other systems an agency desires, as well as anything an agency might need for an integrated mugshot system. PictureLink is used to capture mugshots when booking and releasing inmates. In addition, Forensics can use PictureLink for employee ID photos and sex offender registration. When PictureLink is used for booking, a booker first enters descriptor data into the jail management application, then the inmate is photographed and fingerprinted. The photo is immediately available. It is printed on the inmate's ID bracelet in full color and attached to the wrist. Additional photos go to records and the agency booking the prisoner. The records, mugshot, and fingerprint systems are all tied together. PictureLink also manages crime scene photos, evidence photos, and property photos -- any photos useful in a law enforcement environment. The tenprint system can link two completely divergent law enforcement data systems by way of the mugshot environment. One way agencies share information is through Web technology. PictureLink.net is used so client software does not need to be installed on individual computers to allow access to inmate information. PictureLink keeps expanding to include even more capabilities for more agencies.
