This manual instructs recruits in the organization and operations of the Pima County Sheriff's Department's (Arizona) field training and evaluation program, which combines prefield training with field training and objective evaluations to ensure that recruits meet the performance standards for competent beat officers.
Abstract
The program, which is divided into 4 phases over 13 weeks, provides recruits instruction, direction, supervision, and experience in the performance of job tasks. Throughout the program, recruits are paired with training officers. This manual describes the duties and responsibilities of the recruit officer, the training officer, the field sergeant, and the field training coordinator, followed by an overview of the program's structure and operations. The overview encompasses an outline of program phases, the organization and purpose of boards which assess recruit progress, the examination schedule, the procedure for recommending employment termination, performance rating scales, and scale value application. Standardized evaluation guidelines define evaluation measures for each job task and skill. The manual details techniques and procedures recruits are to use in performing 16 tasks. A checklist enables recruits to maintain a record of the tasks to which they have been exposed. A reading list is provided for each week of the program.
