THE EFFORTS OF THE PITTSBURGH NEIGHBORHOOD ALLIANCE IN CONDUCTING THE COMMUNITIES COMBATTING CRIME PROGRAM THROUGH NINE COMMUNITY-WIDE AND NEIGHBORHOOD PROJECTS ARE REPORTED FOR AUGUST 1978 THROUGH AUGUST 1979.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM REPRESENTED A COORDINATED CRIME PREVENTION EFFORT IN WHICH EACH PROJECT CONDUCTED UNIQUE ACTIVITIES IN A LIMITED AREA OF SERVICE. THE PROJECTS WERE AS FOLLOWS: (1) THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROJECT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR SETTING UP AND CARRYING OUT THE PROGRAM AS A TOTAL CRIME PREVENTION EFFORT. (2) THE PUBLIC RELATIONS/OUTREACH PROJECT WAS INTENDED TO MAKE THE PUBLIC AWARE OF THE WHOLE PROGRAM. (3) THE CRIME INFORMATION LINE RELAYED INFORMATION FROM THE PUBLIC ON PAST AND FUTURE CRIMES TO THE POLICE. (4) THE POLICE-COMMUNITY BROKER PROGRAM PROVIDED PROFESSIONAL SOCIAL WORK ASSISTANCE TO CITIZENS WHO CONTACTED THE POLICE FOR INTERVENTION IN PROBLEMS OF A SOCIAL RATHER THAN A CRIMINAL NATURE. (5) THE ANTI-VICTIMIZATION PROJECT FOR HANDICAPPED CITIZENS PROVIDED CRIME PREVENTION EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, CRISIS INTERVENTION, AND REFERRAL SERVICES FOR THE HANDICAPPED. (6) THE JUVENILE AWARENESS PROJECT AIMED TO REDUCE JUVENILE INVOLVEMENT IN CRIME BY TEACHING THE CONSEQUENCES OF INVOLVEMENT IN DRUGS, ALCOHOL, AND CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES. (7) THE HOMEWOOD-BRUSHTON HOME SECURITY PROJECT WAS INTENDED TO REDUCE THE INCIDENCE AND FEAR OF BURGLARY THROUGH A HOME SECURITY PROGRAM. (8) THE BELTZHOOVER CAREER COUNSELING PROJECT FOR YOUTH PROVIDED CAREER COUNSELING AND DEVELOPMENT AND (9) THE WEST END/ELLIOT TEEN AND SENIOR COALITION PROVIDED A RECREATION PROGRAM TO PREVENT YOUTH VANDALISM AND LOITERING, CONTACTS BETWEEN SENIOR CITIZENS AND YOUTHS TO DEVELOP WORKING RELATIONSHIPS, AND BLOCK CLUBS TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON CRIME PREVENTION.
