SUGGESTIONS FOR BETTER MEANS OF PROVIDING COMPENSATION TO VICTIMS OF CRIMES AND COMPELLING THE CRIMINAL TO ASSUME HIS RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS CRIME.
Abstract
A CANADIAN LEGAL SCHOLAR RECOMMENDS THAT A BETTER SYSTEM OF VICTIM RESTITUTION COULD AID IN THE DUAL PURPOSE OF CRIMINAL LAW-DETERRENCE AND REHABILITATION. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT IF CRIMINALS WERE FORCED TO REPAY VICTIMS, CRIME WOULD BE LESS PROFITABLE AND THEREFORE BE DETERRED, AND THAT COMPENSATING VICTIMS COULD HAVE A REHABILITATIVE EFFECT ON THE CRIMINAL.
