THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES THE RICHARDSON (TX) BICYCLE PATROL WHICH WAS PART OF A TWO-PHASE PROGRAM TO DETER THEFT, BURGLARY, VANDALISM AND OTHER CRIMINAL ACTIVITY IN THE CITY'S AFFLUENT SUBURBAN COMMUNITIES.
Abstract
THE PATROL TEAMS WORKING OVERTIME, OFF-DUTY HOURS TOURED THE BACK ALLEYS OF THE COMMUNITIES WHICH HAD BEEN SERIOUSLY VICTIMIZED. ALTHOUGH THE ROUTES OF THE CRIMINAL ACTIVITY, THESE ALLEYS WERE DEEMED INACCESIBLE BY PATROL CARS. THE SECOND PHASE OF THE PROGRAM INVOLVED COMMUNITY AWARENESS THROUGH MEDIA PUBLICITY. THE BICYCLE PATROL WAS FOUND TO BE AN EFFECTIVE DETERRENT PRODUCING IMMEDIATE RESULTS....TWH
