Abstract
A PROFILE AND ANALYSIS OF FLORIDA'S ELDERLY POPULATION IS PROVIDED, WITH ATTENTION TO POPULATION DISPERSION, EDUCATIONAL LEVEL, EMPLOYMENT, AND INCOME. CRIME AND SYSTEM DATA ARE PRESENTED AND EXAMINED IN TERMS OF THE CRIME SITUATION AGAINST THE ELDERLY; THE SPECIFIC FOCUS IS ON THE RATES AND CONSEQUENCES OF VICTIMIZATION, AND TO SOME EXTENT, ON THE PROFILE OF THE OFFENDER. FOLLOWING A SECTION DEALING WITH A STATEWIDE SURVEY ON THE VICTIMIZATION OF THE ELDERLY CONDUCTED BY THE BUREAU OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNING AND ASSISTANCE AND DEVELOPED TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF FLORIDA'S ELDERLY POPULATION AND TO INVESTIGATE SUCH RELATED ISSUES AS CRIME PREVENTION AND FEAR OF CRIME, A LIST OF THE SIGNIFICANT TEST STATISTICS WHICH RESULTED FROM AN ANALYSIS OF THE VICTIMIZATION SURVEY IS PROVIDED. SPANISH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE VERSIONS OF THE SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE ARE INCLUDED. THE TYPES OF PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS WHICH HAVE BEEN INITIATED FOR THE PURPOSE OF ADDRESSING PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY THE ELDERLY ARE DESCRIBED, ALONG WITH TESTIMONY GIVEN BEFORE THE CRIME AND ELDERLY TASK FORCE. A COPY OF A STATE LAW MANDATING AN ANNUAL 'CRIME AND THE ELDERLY PLAN' FOR THE PURPOSE OF PREVENTING AND REDUCING CRIME AND FEAR OF CRIME AMONG THE ELDERLY IS PRESENTED. (KBL)
