To address the unique challenges and approaches to the programming of correctional facilities, this chapter outlines each step of the programming process.
Abstract
The steps involved in programming correctional facilities range from reaching consensus and articulating the client's mission through design review and also include postoccupancy evaluations and, when appropriate, value engineering. In addition to eventual construction and operational savings, programming correctional facilities brings other benefits. Clients generally benefit greatly from involvement in the process of defining, analyzing, and refining functional activities and needs. Similarly, space planning generally is enhanced. Both staff relations and morale improve because those in charge of operations have defined options and weighed the tradeoffs that frequently result in operational refinements. Recommendations are proposed to planners of correctional facilities. 13 figures and 13 references
