This manual was developed based on the experiences of more than 100 child abuse prevention projects throughout Ohio, and the goal of the manual is to integrate abstract principles of program development and prevention with real world experiences and challenges faced by prevention projects on a daily basis.
Abstract
The manual starts with an overview of child abuse prevention. Subsequent chapters deal with cultural competence and communicating effectively, determining community needs, designing child abuse prevention projects, funding, project implementation, and project evaluation. Specific techniques applicable to the implementation of child abuse prevention projects are detailed, such as structured group techniques, needs assessment, written reports, advantages and disadvantages of using surveys, the use of community leaders as resources, developing objectives and clear statements of need, working with volunteers, training, and public relations. Appendixes contain supplemental information on child abuse indicators, Federal resources for child abuse and neglect prevention activities, national organizations and information resources, sources of statistical information and other resources, and a sample child abuse and neglect reporting policy for prevention program staff.
