In October 1992, the Federal Judicial Center surveyed nearly all Federal judges on a wide range of issues affecting Federal courts.
Abstract
The survey obtained data from active and senior circuit judges, active and senior district judges, judges on the Court of Federal Claims and the Court of International Trade, bankruptcy judges, and full-time and part-time magistrate judges. Of 1,826 surveys mailed, 1,489 responses were received, for a response rate of 81.5 percent. Responses provide data on the nature and severity of problems in Federal courts (civil and criminal case volumes, prisoner litigation, scope of civil and criminal jurisdiction, resources, judicial vacancies, and legal interpretations); court structures and relationships; and court jurisdiction, size, and resources. Data are also tabulated on court administration and governance, discovery, the jury, criminal sanctions, appeals, counsel availability and compensation, and civil dispute resolution methods. Tables
