Abstract
THE TEXT WAS PREPARED FOR THE TEXAS CRIME PREVENTION INSTITUTE OF SOUTHWEST TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY. OPENING CHAPTERS, DESIGNED TO FAMILIARIZE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PLANNERS WITH THE PHYSICAL PLANNING PROCESS, COVER THE PLANNING FUNCTION AND PLANNING TOOLS (ZONING AND SUBDIVISION ORDINANCES AND CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAMING). CHAPTERS ON PLANNING FOR DEFENSIBLE SPACE AND FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MODIFICATION INTRODUCE THE IDEA THAT CRIME CAN BE PREVENTED THRUGH APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPLES OF PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN.
