While burnout syndrome among police officers is well documented and recognized, another problem that may afflict officers and display similar symptoms is plateauing which leaves an individual feeling that his job is routine and boring. This situation can significantly undermine an officer's ability to perform well.
Abstract
Content plateauing occurs when career goals are met, structural plateauing when quick promotions end, and life plateauing when work becomes the most important aspect of one's life. Unlike those experiencing burnout, plateaued officers usually do not exhibit psychological or physiological problems. Because the problem is less complex than that presented by burnout, the solutions are often more easily implemented. The effects of plateauing can be reversed through lateral transfers, new duty assignments, continuing education, or counseling. 3 references
