Abstract
The book discusses several basic considerations crucial to understanding the unique features of police administration: the development and environment of police administration; the nature of police work; police goals and objectives; police organizational tasks; and the role of the police executive. It then examines police administration from: (1) the systems perspective, which emphasizes the interrelatedness of units and organizations, the influence of external conditions and the importance of feedback; (2) the traditional perspective, which highlights administrative principles, management functions and the importance of written guidelines; (3) the structural perspective; (4) the behavioral perspective, which stresses the human element in organizations; and (5) the strategic management perspective, which considers communications and information systems, evaluation of police performance, police strategies and tactics, and increasing police agencies’ effectiveness.
