Abstract
Part one introduces basic concepts and theories of management, derived largely from business administration practices and applied to the specific requirements of law enforcement. Hierarchical organization, research and planning, and budgeting are covered. Part two presents both theoretical and practical approaches to managing buildings, vehicles, personal equipment, information systems, and property and evidence. The management of human resources is addressed in part three, with attention to recruitment and selection, training, career development, leadership, and discipline. The next section discusses the basic principles of organization and administration of police patrol, traffic law enforcement, criminal investigation, and auxiliary and support units. The text concludes with observations on relationships between a law enforcement agency and the community it serves. Each chapter contains a simulation exercise for the student to complete using documents that might be in the basket on an administrator's desk. Review questions and references accompany each chapter. The text provides a glossary, bibliography, and an index.
