CONSIDERATION OF THE NATURE AND SCOPE OF THE CONFLICTS CAUSED BY INCONSISTENT AND COMPETING DEMANDS FOR THE POLICEMAN'S ATTENTION.
Abstract
THE ROLES THAT APPLY TO POLICEMEN RANGE FROM CONTROL FUNCTIONS TO SUPPORTIVE FUNCTIONS. AT THE CONTROL END, THE POLICE WIELD COERCIVE POWER AND AT THE SUPPORTIVE END OF THE SPECTRUM THE POLICE FULFILL SUCH FUNCTIONS AS JUVENILE DELINQUENCY PREVENTION. THE CONCEPT OF ROLE CONFLICT PROVIDES A PERSPECTIVE FROM WHICH TO VIEW BOTH THE INDIVIDUAL POLICEMAN AND THE POLICE EXECUTIVE. ONE WAY TO MINIMIZE ROLE CONFLICT IS TO PLACE ROLE EXPECTATIONS AND PRIORITIES IN REASONABLE ORDER.
