Abstract
EARLY ATTEMPTS AT HUMAN RELATIONS TRAINING PROGRAMS FOR POLICE ARE EXAMINED ALONG WITH STUDIES INVESTIGATING THE POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIP AS SEEN BY BOTH THE POLICE AND THE PUBLIC. FACTORS COMPLICATING THE PROCESS OF ACHIEVING A CONSENSUS ON WHAT POLICE AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS MIGHT BECOME ARE ANALYZED. COMMUNITY STRUCTURE, POLICE MORALE, POLICE SUBCULTURES, PREJUDICE, PERCEPTION, AND RUMOR ARE ALL SUBJECTS OF SOME OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDIES REVIEWED BY THE AUTHOR. INVESTIGATION RESULTS REGARDING PARTICULAR PROBLEMS OF SEVERAL DIFFERENT MINORITY GROUPS ARE PRESENTED AS IS A MODEL FOR HANDLING CITIZEN COMPLAINTS TO AND ABOUT THE POLICE. STUDIES ARE DESCRIBED WHICH DEAL WITH SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS SUCH AS THE POLICE ROLE IN RELATION TO THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM, MISDEMEANANT PROBATION PRACTICES, AND THE POLICE AND THE PRESS. A STUDY ON BLUE POWER, SUGGESTING THE GROWING ABILITY OF THE POLICE TO RESIST POLITICAL PRESSURES, AND AN ASSESSMENT OF THE ATTICA TRAGEDY ARE INCLUDED. THE LAST SECTION OF THE BOOK PRESENTS REPORTS ON SPECIFIC PROGRAMS THAT HAVE BEEN OPERATING THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF IMPROVING POLICECOMMUNITY RELATIONS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS FURNISHED. THIS COLLECTION OF STUDIES WILL PROVE USEFUL TO INDIVIDUALS INTERESTED IN LEARNING HOW SOCIETAL RELATIONSHIPS AFFECT LAW AND ORDER WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITIES. (SNI ABSTRACT)
