This document presents aggregate salary data on police and firefighters, as well as individual listings for approximately 1,000 jurisdictions that responded to the International City Management Association's survey with salary figures that were in effect as of January 1, 1986.
Abstract
The report shows changes in minimum salaries for police privates, lieutenants, and chiefs between 1973 and 1986 for selected cities. These data reveal that police salaries are highest in the West and lowest in the South, a finding supported by other research. These data substantiate the claim that police administrators in larger jurisdictions are rewarded with higher salaries than their counterparts in smaller jurisdictions. Firefighter salary data reveals similar trends. Comparisons of police and firefighter salaries reveal that differences are negligible and are at lower level salary positions. Tables containing information on jurisdictions cover minimum and maximum salaries for 12 different positions in police and fire departments, but exclude part-time and volunteer personnel.
